Amazon says it will add hundreds of thousands of new temporary jobs for the holiday season, as the e-commerce giant prepares for a surge in online orders. On Monday, the company confirmed that about 250,000 seasonal roles are expected to be filled soon, part of a nationwide effort to boost staff levels and support operations during its busiest time of the year.
The new hiring push focuses particularly on America's rural communities, where job opportunities are often limited. "We find that our seasonal roles are really popular—often filling up within minutes of being posted—because they meet different needs for so many different people," said Sandy Gordon, Amazon’s Vice President of Global Operations.
Amazon seasonal jobs run roughly from October through December, offering an average wage of over $19 an hour for temporary workers. Regular full- and part-time employees earn $23 an hour plus benefits.
"For some, it’s a few months of extra income to support their families during the holidays," Gordon added. "For others, it’s the first step in building a new career path." These Amazon seasonal jobs also continue a pattern for the e-commerce giant, which has ramped up temporary hiring for three years in a row to meet growing demand.
Historically, Amazon seasonal jobs have been a major part of the company’s strategy to expand its workforce in key regions. In 2021, the company added around 150,000 temporary employees, with wages ranging from $17 to $28 per hour.
In 2023, Amazon’s seasonal hiring wave reportedly added approximately 100,000 more workers than initially planned, alongside the opening of 50 or more new U.S.-based facilities. This year, despite economic factors such as rising inflation and policy changes, Amazon seasonal jobs remain a priority to ensure the company can meet holiday demand.
According to employment research firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, overall seasonal jobs across the U.S. are expected to be the lowest since 2009. Even so, Amazon seasonal jobs offer competitive pay, benefits, and valuable experience for candidates in communities with limited employment options.
Analysts note that these seasonal positions not only help Amazon meet demand but also provide income opportunities and career pathways. Many workers use Amazon seasonal jobs as a bridge to permanent employment or as an entry point into the logistics and retail industry.
With the holidays approaching, Amazon says it will add hundreds of thousands of new temporary roles, making Amazon seasonal jobs one of the most sought-after employment opportunities this year.
