Over the past few years, 3D printed sneakers have been making waves in the shoe industry with unlimited design potential and sustainable alternatives to traditional manufacturing processes.

Italian startup Servati is making all the headlines now by introducing fully recyclable sneakers made with the help of additive manufacturing. The new brand recently dominated Milan Fashion Week 2025 as it unveiled its groundbreaking collections at iconic Palazzo Giureconsulti.

At the heart of this tale is Matteo Di Paola, CEO and co-founder of Servati, who, along with designer and co-founder Marco Primiceri, embarked on a mission to revolutionize the way sneakers are created, manufactured, and worn. Their dream? A world where technology, sustainability, and fashion march together.

Dismantling Barriers through 3D Printing

Servati was born out of a passion for sneakers and cutting-edge technology. From Di Paola's perspective, 3D printing lowered the traditional hurdles to entry in the shoe industry by lowering setup costs for new designs and enabling quick prototyping. Instead of expensive molds and long development periods, the firm employs computer design software to create prototypes quickly and inexpensively.

Everything is printed in-house on a farm of more than 30 FDM 3D printers, supplied with brands like Artillery, Creality, and Anycubic. Printed sneaker components are then paired with textile uppers and assembled together with no chemicals or solvents. This disassembly-friendly process means every pair of 3D printed sneakers can be recycled at the end of its life.

From Design to Sneakers on Your Feet

A Servati sneaker's life begins as a computer 3D model that is scaled up to many sizes and print-optimized. All parts are carefully traced with LiDAR to ensure print quality and limit waste. Once printed, the parts are post-processed before assembly of the final shoe. The final product? A comfortable, fashionable shoe that's fully recyclable.

Servati’s product line includes models like the INIZIO DARK FOAM, the SLIDES FUN in both black and white, and the futuristic HYPER BOOT. Each collection demonstrates how 3D printed sneakers can combine high fashion with sustainability, proving that eco-conscious design does not have to compromise on aesthetics.

Customers and Collaborations

Servati sells primarily over its online marketplace, addressing fashion lovers who value innovation and sustainability. Besides B2C sales, the company also collaborates with fashion institutions, brands, and designers in prototyping and experimental activities. This hybrid model enables Servati to serve industry partners as well as direct consumers, and also promotes innovation in fashion technology.

Already, the startup has gained recognition from the Ministry of Made in Italy as among Italy's most innovative ventures and even presented alongside known giants such as Ferrari and Brembo. Being invited to present at Milan Fashion Week further solidified Servati as a trailblazer of 3D printed sneakers.

The Boomerang Process: Sustainability in Action

One of the most innovative projects of Servati is its Boomerang Process, which makes sneakers never go to waste. Clients are incentivized to bring back used pairs in favor of a voucher towards new ones. Used sneakers are taken apart and recycled into brand-new versions, forming a closed-loop production cycle that minimizes environmental footprint.

This commitment to sustainability sets Servati apart from a fashion industry that has come under scrutiny for overproduction and excess. By combining on-demand 3D printing with recyclability, the company shows the way that shoes can be both innovative and sustainable.

Empowering the Next Generation

Beyond sneakers, Servati also invests in the future of fashion design. Its annual Design Challenge invites young designers to submit sneaker concepts, with winners receiving the chance to have their designs produced and sold through Servati’s channels. This initiative not only fosters creativity but also makes high-end fashion more accessible and inclusive.

The Future of 3D Printed Sneakers

As Di Paola explains, 3D printing in fashion offers more than cost reduction—it enables on-demand production, eliminates inventory risk, and enables limitless creativity. With Servati in command, 3D printed sneakers may become the new standard, offering a stylish yet sustainable alternative for global consumers.
